Products to Control a Dry, Itchy, or Flaky Scalp

(Left to right) Organic Argan Oil, Scalp Therapy Shampoo, Healing Conditioner, Therapeutic T-Gel Shampoo, T-Gel Therapeutic Conditioner
The summer after my freshmen year of college I started to develop an extremely dry scalp. It wasn’t dandruff, but it was more of a constant itchy feeling with large flakes that I could peel off, TMI. It was keeping me up at night due to the constant itching and I tried a lot of different things to try and help it, like trying dandruff shampoos, different brands, cutting my hair, but nothing helped.

I told my mom and she got me some shampoo to try, the Neutrogena T-Gel Therapeutic Shampoo and Conditioner (which is recommended for dandruff, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis). It was amazing! Immediately after using it I could tell a huge difference. That was four years ago and I’m still using that shampoo and conditioner to this day.

The shampoo doesn’t smell the best, but the conditioner smells a lot better. It’s definitely something you get used to though. The scent doesn’t linger after washing plus I always put other products in my hair, like heat protectant, so I’ve never noticed the scent throughout the day.

I also tried Neutrogena’s 2 in 1 Daily Shampoo/Conditioner but felt it didn’t work as well as the Original formula, which I let set in my hair for a few minutes before rinsing out and using the conditioner. The only problem I now had was finding a shampoo and condition to use daily (since you’re only supposed to use the Neutrogena T-Gel 1-2 times a week).  Using it too often removes most of the oil your hair naturally produces, so then your body starts to produce even more oil to make up for it, which will give you an oily head (according to my hairdresser).

Pura D’or sent me their Scalp Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as their Pure Organic Argan Oil, so I have been using these on the days I don’t use the T-Gel. I’ve been using the Scalp Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner for over the past two months and so far they have been working great at preventing itching and flaking! I was actually pretty impressed with how well they have been doing because other brands I’ve tried for an extended period of time just made my head itchy again. This is the only brand I have tried so far that has allowed me to go the longest without using the T-Gel. Plus the scents are similar to the T-Gel ones (strong shampoo scent with the conditioner smelling better).

According to the bottle, the Pura D’or Scalp Therapy works at controlling flaking, relieving scaling and itching, soothing the scalp, and moisturizing hair. So far it has worked at controlling all these issues with my scalp! I like that the bottles have push pump tops, it just makes it easier in the shower to get a consistent amount each time. The shampoo also lathers up really nicely, I’ve had issues in the past with other shampoos not lathering up and when they don’t I just feel like my hair isn’t getting as clean! I leave the product on my hair for a few minutes before rinsing out and then apply the conditioner.

Also I don’t know if this had anything to do with the shampoo/conditioner but I feel like my hair has been growing really fast since I started using it! I got a haircut in January and two months later had to get another one because my hair had grown so much (usually I would go 4-5 months before getting a cut).

I also tried their Organic Argan Oil, which can be used on your body, hair, and face. So far I haven’t used it on my head but I like to use it on my cuticles, because it came with a dropper applicator and I love those for applying products to nail beds.

I get a 16 oz. bottle of the Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo on Neutrogena.com or Amazon for $14.99 (Ulta used to carry it but stopped). Other smaller bottles are also available which is nice for those who want to give it a test before committing to a large bottle. The conditioner bottle is $6.49 for 4.4 fl. oz., which is the only size offered.

The Pura D’or Scalp Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner 16 fl. oz. bottles retail for $19.99 each. These are available on their website www.purador.com or instore/online at CVS, Target, Walgreens, and Amazon (other retailers are listed on their site). They also have products that can be used to prevent hair loss, strengthen, and enrich your hair.

If you have a dry or really itchy scalp I definitely recommend giving these products a try!
